- Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a respiratory tract infection that first presents like a common cold.
- Most teens and adults recover without many problems, but young children and older adults can have serious complications.
- After 1-2 weeks, symptoms of whooping cough that develop include:
- long coughing spells
- vomiting with coughing
- a gasp or whooping sound after a coughing spell
- Testing for pertussis is done by a nasal swab that tests for the B. Pertussis bacteria, and treatment may include a course of an antibiotic.
- DTaP and Tdap vaccinations provide some protection from pertussis.
- Call us if your child develops symptoms of whooping cough.
