Pertussis Exposure in School

  • Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a respiratory tract infection that first presents like a common cold.
  • Most teens and adults recover without many problems, but young children and older adults can have serious complications.
  • After 1-2 weeks, symptoms of whooping cough that develop include:
    • long coughing spells
    • vomiting with coughing
    • a gasp or whooping sound after a coughing spell
  • Testing for pertussis is done by a nasal swab that tests for the B. Pertussis bacteria, and treatment may include a course of an antibiotic.
  • DTaP and Tdap vaccinations provide some protection from pertussis.
  • Call us if your child develops symptoms of whooping cough.
